Last month, it was discovered that due to a demand-supply imbalance of fast UFS NAND memory chips, Huawei was using slower eMMC NAND in certain variants of the P10. Now, it has been discovered that Samsung is doing something similar as well on its flagship handset: the Galaxy S8. The company is using either UFS 2.1 or UFS 2.0 NAND on certain Galaxy S8 variants. Samsung has already confirmed that it will be unveiling the Galaxy S9 on February 25th at Barcelona, Spain. Now, a new report from South Korea claims that the handset will go up for pre-order in the country soon after that. After its unveiling on February 25, Samsung will start accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus in South Korea from March 2. Last week, Samsung updated the Galaxy Note 3 to Android 4.4 KitKat. Turns out that update had some code in it that made third party cases, specifically those with flip covers, stop working correctly. At first Samsung denied that this was even an issue, going to far as to insist that you should buy Samsung cases if you want them to work properly with Samsung phones. According to Ars.Technica, that stance has now changed, and Samsung will issue yet anther software update that will make third party cases work exactly as they should....

Samsung has decided to go ahead with its plans of launching a smart speaker which will be powered by Bixby. Focusing on sound quality and integration with other home devices, the Korean company intends to launch the smart speaker in the first half of 2018. The smart speaker will also communicate and synchronise with TVs and other Galaxy devices from Samsung. It will also act as a hub for SmartThings, Samsung’s own home integration ecosystem....

Sony just announced a new phone called the Xperia M. As the headline suggests, it has a 4 inch screen. Said screen pumps out 854 x 480 pixels. Sony decided that going with an Xperia Z2 Compact wasn’t necessary, apparently, as the company has indeed done what the leaks and rumors suggested they would, and announced the brand new Xperia Z3 Compact. As you can already guess, it’s a smaller variant, with a few more “compromises” to specs when compared to Sony’s newest flagship model. Cruise operator Royal Caribbean will deploy Starlink across its entire fleet to improve connectivity for guests and crew. Cruise ships have in the past had to rely on expensive satellite internet services that rarely offer enough bandwidth to do a Zoom meeting. Royal Caribbean promises Starlink will be a game-changer for passengers. “Kickass Internet connection coming Royal Caribbean ships soon!”, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter. Royal Caribbean tweeted that the fleet-wide Starlink deployment will deliver “game-changing, high-speed internet”....

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge from Samsung are still relatively fresh on the market, but for anyone that’s a big fan of Iron Man and hasn’t picked one up yet, the wait might have been worth it. According to a report from the Korea Times, Samsung has confirmed that it will be launching a “special edition” Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge by the end of this month sometime....

The tech industry has long struggled with issues of diversity: more than nine in 10 software developers worldwide are men. Now it is revealed that the device Samsung Galaxy S8 is codenamed by the Samsung and called internally ‘Project Dream’. Samsung today announced that its payment service, Samsung Pay, is off to a successful start in South Korea where it managed to process transactions of more than $30 million in just a month. The company notes that a total of 1.5 million transactions have occurred through Samsung Pay in this period, with over 60 percent of them taking place on the Galaxy Note5. Considering that Samsung Pay is only available on a handful of high-end Samsung devices, it is quite impressive that the payment service has already manage to process more than $30 million in transaction....
